All of us know that we need protein as supplements especially if we go to gym for body building. Some of the most common supplements are protein powders, drinks and bars that we used in our daily life. But do you know that the protein found in these supplements are WHEY?
This whey protein comes from dairy. The Whey protein come in two different forms i.e, Isolate and Concentrate. Today, in this article we will be discussing about these two forms of Whey proteins and their differences.
What is Whey Protein?
Milk is one of the best protein in india. The powders, drinks or bars, all of them are derived from milk.
All of us know that milk is processed to form cheese and yogurt. When milk is processed for cheese and yogurt, we get the remaining liquid. This liquid contains whey protein which gets digested very fast. Due to their fast digestion, these proteins are used as a supplements for body builders.
Milk contains 20 percent of whey protein and 80 percent of casein proteins. Casein proteins digests very slowly. But both of them are the best source of protein as they contain amino acids which is very useful for our body.
However, Whey protein has the power of producing new proteins in our body and therefore, it is used as a supplement.
There are multiple types of proteins but the most used are the Isolate and Concentrate. These are the most common ones which you can find everywhere.
Both of them are made through different processing methods but if you look at their nutritional values they vary only a slightly from each other.
Difference between Whey isolate and Whey Concentrate
Since both whey isolate and whey Concentrate are prepared by different methods, the nutritional values of both of them varies too. After the collection of Whey from the remains of the processing of cheese and yogurt, it goes through many other processing in which the protein content is increased to a percentage of 80 by weight. The 20 percent that is left includes fats and carbohydrates. This is in the form of dried concentrate powder.
When the concentrate powder goes through some more processings to increase the percentage of protein content by 90 then the result that we get is the isolate Whey protein. This contains more of the whey protein and less carbohydrate and fats in it.
But you would find the same concentration of amino acids in both of them. This is because both of them are produced from the same source i.e. milk.
Difference between Whey Isolate and Whey Concentrate per 100 calorie servings:
Whey isolate has both carbohydrate and lactose less in concentration, which makes it a better choice for people who are intolerant to lactose. However, both the form of Whey protein contains less lactose which is good for people intolerant to lactose.
Since whey Isolate is costlier you can take more amount of whey concentrate to get the same quantity of whey protein. But this depends upon the quality of the whey isolate you get.
Benefits of taking Whey Isolate and Whey concentrate
It has been found on many studies that whey proteins are beneficial for people who are active. A recent study on 190 people found that the intake of whey protein, either whey isolate or whey concentrate, results in improvements in the weight and mass gain for lean body type people.
There are a few differences in both the forms of proteins but till now no study has found any different effect on body by taking of these two different protein supplements. It means that both of them have the same effect on human body.
Both the forms of protein are of high quality and come from the same source i.e dairy and therefore if same or equivalent amount of protein is taken on a regular basis then both of them will give you the same result.
Note:- Many supplements contain a blend of proteins which contains both the Isolate Whey as well as Concentrate whey protein.
Wrapping it up
It doesn’t matter which protein type you choose, both of them are high quality proteins and can let you reach at your goal at a regular equivalent intake.
